Eurovelo 6 – Witthoh the watershed of Europe – Specialized Awol

Eurovelo 6 by bike - Witthoh

the watershed ant weathershed of Europe
The Eurovelo 6 is a cycle track which is part of the European tourist cycling system and runs from Constanta (Romania) to Nantes (France). Its highest point of elevation is in Wittoh (Germany) at an altitude of 870 meters above sea level. The mountain where this famous climate point is located falls within the territories of Tuttlingen, Hattingen and Emmingen and is part of the Egg Ridge, which in turn is part of the Hegaualb between the Swabian Alb and Lake Constance. Its scenery is guaranteed to the north by a dense forest as only in continental Europe can be found, while in the south by velvety meadows, well-groomed fields and farms.
Witthoh has a fundamental function for the European climate because it separates the harsh climate of the Alps from the mild influence of Lake Constance. Passing Witthoh the weather seems crazy, even in summer you can go, in a few minutes, from a mild sunny day to a full-blown storm.

Witthoh, in addition to being the star-climate of Europe is also its waters-waters, in fact the rains falling south of Witthoh are poured on Lake Constance and the North Sea, while those that fall north of Witthoh fall on the Danube in the Black Sea. This actually cuts Europe in two and makes the climate in that specific area really very bizarre.

The emotion of crossing such a magical place is even stronger because a few kilometers before we had witnessed the birth of one of the largest rivers in Europe the Danube that in Donauschingen was little more than a little stream where children played happily with water .
We have traveled a large part of the Eurovelo 6 but this remains without a doubt the most emotive part and with the most unforgettable views.

In this stretch of the Eurovelo 6 you will have no problem finding bike friendly facilities. In fact, from hotels to campsites, all the facilities provide special discounts for cyclists and high quality services. The pitches for the tent are generally spacious with rates ranging from 12 to 20 euros.
Food is always a sore point especially for those traveling without the cooking equipment. In this case the quality / price ratio is not always advantageous. In some cases the Gasthaus can have a poor menu both in terms of variety and quality and not always at reasonable prices.

the cycling route
This part of the Eurovelo 6 is the one with the highest elevation. You never reach important heights but the continuous ups and downs can be a problem especially if you carry a heavy baggage. In the worst case it is possible to use bike-shuttle services easily available on Google.

Eurovelo 6 develops mainly on roads with limited traffic or reserved for the transit of bicycles, horses and scooters under 125 cc, but it can happen to go secondary roads or provincial where the speed limit varies from 50 km / h to 100 km / we have noticed that German motorists are not always “kind” with cyclists.

The track that we have traveled may always be subject to changes in the governance body of the Eurovelo so the advice is to double check its validity by connecting to the official website of Eurovelo. This itinerary is just a travel story and as such does not constitute a guide or an official itinerary. Have a nice trip!

It is advisable to plan this itinerary well in advance as in certain periods of the year, especially in spring and summer, it is possible that there will be a flow of cyclists to saturate the accommodation facilities in the area. The route is on roads where petty crime is practically non-existent so it can also be solitary. Wild camping is generally forbidden.
This article is just a suggestion by cyclists and aimed at other riders. The downloadable track is just a suggestion, it is then up to each cyclist to check the correctness of the itinerary, his physical preparation and his ability to drive the bike safely.
